§ 6.12.020. Biting dog—Report to police and impoundment required when.

  • If the owner of any dog has knowledge that the dog has bitten a human being where the bite has penetrated the skin of the person, he shall immediately inform the police department and deliver the dog to the animal shelter to be held for a period of ten days at the owner's expense. If the poundmaster or any police officer is informed that any dog has bitten a human being, and the owner has failed to do either of the things required by this section, he shall immediately impound the dog for such period of ten days at the owner's expense. In lieu of impoundment at the animal shelter, dogs may be impounded with a licensed veterinarian at a veterinary hospital for the ten day period. At the end of the ten day period, if the dog is determined not to be rabid, the dog may be returned to the owner. If the dog is found to be rabid it shall be destroyed.
